“I never wanted to write a ‘cookie-cutter’ footballer’s book—chronologically moving from the under 8s through to the big time, full of hard-ball gets, wins and losses, triumphs and disappointments. I chose the title, THE THINGS THAT MAKE US , because it made it easy to explore things we can all relate to, no matter what path our lives have taken.”

THE THINGS THAT MAKE US is Nick’s take on the events that made him the man he is today. From his childhood in Tasmania to the end of a distinguished AFL career, it’s all here: learning to live life under the spotlight and through a scandal, meeting his now-wife Catherine and starting a family, the devastating passing of his beloved sister Maddie and the great work done by the charitable foundation set up in her name.
Here is the truth about the times that shape us and the things that make us.
“I hope there’s something in these pages for everyone who’s known grief, especially anyone who’s lost a sibling. I hope elements of my story will bring some solace to people who have known similar pain. I hope, too, that my story brings a deeper understanding of a footballer’s crazy world. An insight into what goes into making it, what it takes to stay there, and the crippling anxiety that can consume you when your burden is to accept only the best.”

NICK RIEWOLDT

Number one pick in the 2000 AFL draft, six-time winner of St Kilda’s best and fairest award, five-time All Australian, captain of his club for a record 220 games and 336 games as a star of the AFL, Nick Riewoldt is an out-and-out champion.
But he’s also a man whose intelligence and insight allow him a deeply fascinating perspective on his life and career. The Things that Make Us is Nick’s autobiography, and it’s as powerful, interesting and compelling as the author himself.
